Göran Sterky was a well-known pediatrician, professor at Karolinska Institutet and founder of IHCAR (International Health Care Research).[1] He was born on April 10, 1930 in Stockholm, Sweden and died on November 22, 2025 at age 95 in Lidingö, Sweden.[1] In 1983, he founded IHCAR together with administrator Bodil Hellstedt with the aim of creating a multidisciplinary unit.[1] IHCAR moved to Rektorsvillan in Tomtebod, where Sterky and colleagues created an inspiring environment for PhD students and researchers.[1] It emphasized interdisciplinary research in collaboration with researchers, practitioners and policymakers from low- and middle-income countries, with funding from Sida/SAREC and other sources.[1] In 1987, the Medicines and Society course was attended by participants from nine countries, eight Asian (India, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia) and three Swedish participants.[1] In 1995, at the age of 65, he retired, a symposium was held at the house of the Swedish Society of Medicine, the book 'Memories for the future' was published and the Göran Sterky foundation was established to support researchers from low and middle income countries during stays at KI.[1]
