Living at high altitude protects against diabetes. Scientists have discovered the reason for this protective effect. When the oxygen level drops, the red blood cells switch to a new metabolic mode. These cells then absorb large amounts of glucose from the blood. This helps the body adjust to the thin air while lowering blood sugar. A drug that mimics this effect reversed diabetes in mice. The results suggest a new treatment strategy.
