Failing mechanical heart valves could be given a new lease of life by breaking the device and then providing valve-in-valve therapy. The research suggests this procedure for future interventions. The current mechanical valve leaflets were successfully broken using standard angioplasty. This method enables minimally invasive treatment without opening the chest. Standard angioplasty involves inflating a balloon to break the valve. Valve-in-valve therapy then replaces the damaged valve with a new one. Research has demonstrated the success of this procedure on current mechanical valves.
