People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have higher rates of anxiety and depression[1][5]. Statistics show a year-on-year increase in newly diagnosed disorders of mental development by 24.5%, which is compared to the five-year average of 22.2%[1][5]. In the age group of 15-19 years, the largest year-on-year increase of new patients was recorded by 29.2%, while the most common were neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders with a share of 36.4%[1]. The incidence of depression and anxiety among young people in 2019 reached up to 55%[1]. In 2017, every ninth resident of Slovakia suffered from one or more mental disorders, with the highest prevalence being anxiety disorders[1][4]. Mental disorders are the third leading cause of premature death when lifetime burden is taken into account[1].
