The government in England has announced extra funding for GPs to boost vaccination rates for children. Vaccination targets in general practice will be revised to provide additional financial support to practices with low vaccination rates, particularly in underserved areas. The move comes in response to a recent rise in measles cases, including an outbreak in north London where some children had to be admitted to hospital. The current contract provides incentive payments through the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) only to practices that achieve high levels of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and other vaccines coverage. Practices in areas with lower vaccination rates thus often lose out on payments even as they improve their results. The updated GP contract for 2026-27 will be unveiled this week.
