An example is a patient with lower back pain who, instead of surgery, was helped by core strengthening therapies, cognitive therapies and other non-surgical methods, thereby avoiding surgery and the pain subsided[1]. In 2019, New West Physicians achieved significant reductions in utilization of: epidurals by 81%, nuclear stress tests by 63%, colonoscopies over 75 by 91%, viscosupplementation by 86% and PSA tests by 77% over 69 compared to the average[3]. Cohen was chief medical officer of New West Physicians for 25 years and now serves as director of translational research at Optum[1][2].
