AbbVie announced a $380 million investment in the construction of two new active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facilities in North Chicago, Illinois[1][2]. The new facilities will use advanced manufacturing technologies and artificial intelligence to support the production of next-generation drugs for neurological diseases and obesity[1][2]. Construction will begin in spring 2026 and both facilities will be fully operational in 2029[1][2]. The company plans to hire 300 new workers in North Chicago, including engineers, scientists, production operators and laboratory technicians[1][2]. The investment is part of AbbVie's commitment to invest $100 billion in research, development and capital investment in the US over the next decade[1][2]. In recent months, AbbVie has expanded its API manufacturing capacity in the US, including a new chemical synthesis facility that will allow production of select drugs from Europe and Asia to be brought back to the United States[2].
