A large nine-year Korean study found a paradoxical relationship between smoking and Parkinson's disease. Current smoking status, not long-term smoking history, was the main factor in reducing the risk of this disease. People who actively smoked at the time of the study had a lower risk of Parkinson's disease compared to those who had never smoked. Paradoxically, however, those who had recently quit smoking had a higher risk of the disease than those who continued to smoke. Thus, the study suggests that the risk of Parkinson's disease is not determined by smoking itself, but rather by its current state. These findings point to a complex relationship between tobacco and the development of this neurological disease that differs from the usual health risks associated with smoking.
