Starting January 1, 2026, food products in Canada must carry a front-of-package label (FOPL) with an image of a magnifying glass and the words "High in...", which indicates excess sugar, sodium or saturated fat. This label indicates more than 15% of the daily recommended amount of these substances. Health Canada introduced the FOPL as part of the Healthy Eating Strategy. The label is intended to help reduce the health risks associated with frequent consumption of such foods, including stroke, obesity, heart cancer and high blood pressure. The FOPL was published in July 2022 and the labeling deadline is set for 2026. Food industry lobbying has limited these new nutrition labels.
