A new approach to brain stimulation using a weekly version of high-intensity TMS can treat depression in as little as 5 days. In the UCLA study, patients completed five sessions a day for five days. These patients experienced meaningful relief from depression symptoms comparable to standard six-week treatment. Some patients who did not improve immediately showed strong improvement weeks later. The findings suggest a faster and more affordable path to recovery. Standard TMS treatment involves one session per day for 5 days per week for 4 to 6 weeks.
