In a new clinical study from the University of Bonn, participants with metabolic syndrome followed a low-calorie diet consisting almost entirely of oatmeal for two days. The oatmeal group experienced a 10% decrease in harmful LDL cholesterol compared to the control group[1][2]. In addition, there was a slight weight loss of 2 kg and a reduction in blood pressure[2]. Cholesterol benefits persisted for six weeks after the diet ended[1][2]. Eating approximately 300 grams of oatmeal per day promoted the growth of beneficial gut bacteria[1]. When breaking down fiber, these bacteria produce substances such as ferulic acid, which improve fat metabolism and reduce cholesterol[1]. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications[1].
