Representative Greg Murphy, MD (R-N.C.), a physician and GOP lawmaker, told the American Medical Association (AMA) conference that lawmakers have been silent on insurer abuse for too long and that needs to change.[1][4][6] Murphy is a practicing urological surgeon with over 30 years of experience and the only active surgeon in Congress.[1][4][6][8] He serves as co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus in the 118th and 119th Congresses.[1][5][8] In this role, he focuses on patient-oriented health policy, reducing costs and improving access to quality care.[1][3][8] Along with his colleagues, he criticizes systems like Medicare, where hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud occur by companies inflating patient diagnoses.[7] Emphasis is on reforming PBMs (pharmacy benefit managers), which contribute to high drug prices in the US.[7] The GOP Doctors Caucus also supports legislation to improve access to care in rural areas.[3]
