Research led by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia analyzed data from more than 5 million newborns born between 2017 and 2024 at 403 hospitals across the US[1]. The findings showed that approximately 200,000 newborns (3.92%) did not receive a vitamin K injection[1]. The proportion of children without this injection increased from 2.92% in 2017 to 5.18% in 2024, an increase of 77% over an eight-year period[1]. Based on previous studies, researchers suggest that the main reason is probably parental rejection[1]. Newborns born by vaginal delivery were less likely to be vaccinated (4.2%) compared to those born by caesarean section (3.2%)[1]. According to researchers, vitamin K is a safe and effective way to prevent serious complications, including vitamin K deficiency bleeding[1]. The researchers emphasize that more research is needed to determine whether this trend is leading to an increase in health problems in newborns[1].
