A CDC study warns that Salmonella bacteria may be lurking in ice coolers.[1] Salmonella are bacteria that cause salmonellosis after eating contaminated food.[1] The CDC estimates that Salmonella cause approximately 1.35 million infections in the U.S. each year, the majority from contaminated food.[1] Infection is more common in summer due to warm weather and unrefrigerated food.[1] Only 1 in 30 infections are diagnosed because many patients do not seek medical attention.[1] Most cases of salmonellosis require only supportive care, such as rehydration for diarrhea or vomiting.[4] Antibiotics are recommended only for severe infections or in at-risk patients.[4] Some strains of Salmonella show increasing resistance to antibiotics, which limits treatment options.[1][4]
