A new law in Kansas (SB 244), passed over Gov. Laura Kelly's veto, immediately revoked the driver's licenses and identification cards of trans families if their gender identity does not match their birth gender[1][2][3]. The law also canceled the changes on approximately 1,800 birth certificates and prohibits future changes to the gender data on these documents and driver's licenses[1][2]. The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) has announced that the documents are invalid without delay, with a fee of $8 for a new driver's license and $20 for a corrected birth certificate[1][2]. Additionally, the law prohibits trans people from using public restrooms and locker rooms in state buildings based on their gender identity, with the possibility of private lawsuits for $1,000 per violation.[2][3] KDOR estimates that the law will affect around 1,800 people, including 159 recent sex change[2]. Two Kansas trans residents have filed a lawsuit against the law over the invalidation of their driver's licenses and the risks of related complaints[3].
