[World Report] Candidates prepare for WHO Director-General election

Candidates are gearing up for the election of WHO director-general in a period of unrest.[1] There is a wide field of unofficial candidates to take over the leadership of the agency.[1] Six candidates were proposed by six countries: Ethiopia proposed Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Italy Dr. Flaviu Bustreo, France Professor Philippe Douste-Blazé, United Kingdom Dr. David Nabarra, Pakistan Dr. Saniu Nishtar and Hungary Dr. Miklós Szócska.[1][2] Five of them are doctors and four have served as ministers of health in their countries.[2] The current general director Dr. Margaret Chan's second term will end on June 30, 2017, and a new director will take office on July 1, 2017.[1][2] The nomination process took place from 22 April to 22 September 2016 among 194 WHO member states.[1] Candidates 1.–2. November, they will participate in a forum where they will present their visions and answer questions.[1]
