A study of nearly a million veterans found that insomnia and sleep apnea dramatically increase the risk of hypertension and heart disease. These two sleep disorders not only coexist, but interact in ways that intensify the workload on the heart. Struggling to fall asleep and repeatedly stopping breathing at night make for a risky combination. Early resolution of sleep problems could help prevent cardiovascular disease.
