Bubble tea may have hidden drawbacks due to tapioca pearls made from cassava, which absorb heavy metals such as lead[1]. In large amounts, these pearls can slow down digestion or cause constipation[1]. The drink often contains more sugar than soda, which increases the risk of cavities, obesity, diabetes and fatty liver[1]. Reports have linked frequent consumption of bubble tea to kidney stones and poorer mental health[1]. All tested drinks contained more sugar than the upper limit of 25 g per day according to WHO[1]. High sugar content contributes to tooth decay, overweight, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some types of cancer[1]. Regular consumption is not particularly suitable for children[1].
