European health leaders say AI tools must be designed and implemented alongside doctors and other health professionals, not as a replacement for them. In a panel discussion on the healthcare workforce in the age of AI held at the European Parliament on 25 February, doctors called for regulation to match the reality of AI use by doctors and patients. Health technology assessments provide an opportunity to separate non-functional tools from those that actually work. Many AI tools sold do not work or do not live up to the promises made by the manufacturers. Serious processes are needed to verify them. Workforce planning must consider the role of AI in healthcare, how doctors are trained, and the number of training sessions.
