A 2×2 mm wireless retinal implant helps people blinded by advanced age-related macular degeneration. The implant replaces damaged light-sensitive cells in the retina and converts light into electrical signals. These signals restore communication between the eye and the brain. In a large international clinical trial, more than 80% of participants gained meaningful central vision. Many participants were able to read letters and even words again after years of vision loss. The device thus gives new hope to blind patients.
