Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco have discovered a protein called CUL5 that acts as the brain's natural cleaning system, removing toxic tau protein before it can form harmful clumps[1]. Neuronal cells with higher amounts of CUL5 are less vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease[1]. Researchers have found that cellular stress caused by oxidative stress makes the tau protein "stickier" and more prone to clumping[1]. The study also revealed that mitochondrial stress (disruption of the energy centers of cells) triggers the production of a specific tau fragment of approximately 25 kilodaltons in size, which resembles biomarkers found in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer's patients[7]. Analysis of brain tissue from patients with Alzheimer's disease confirmed that higher expression of CUL5-related components increases the probability of neuronal survival despite the accumulation of tau protein[7].
