Scientists have discovered that albumin, the most abundant protein in human blood, may play a role in fighting mucormycosis, a deadly black fungus infection. Mucormycosis is a rapidly spreading and often fatal fungal infection. In an international study, they found that patients with this infection have surprisingly low levels of albumin. Albumin deficiency strongly predicts death in these patients.
