Danone has increased the prices of some of its best-selling products Aptamil and Cow & Gate since September, including a 17 percent increase. An 800g pack of Aptamil reached £14.50 after a 26 per cent rise from March 2021 to April 2023, according to analysis by the charity First Steps Nutrition Trust. An 800g pack of Cow & Gate rose by 31 per cent over the same period. Danone has 71 per cent of the powdered infant formula market in the UK and overall infant formula prices have risen by 24 per cent over the past two years. High prices forced parents, especially in lower-income families, into debt, skipping their own meals or introducing solid foods too early. The formula industry is facing intense scrutiny after a contamination outbreak hit several manufacturers, including Danone and Nestlé. Danone announced a 7 percent cut in wholesale Aptamil prices from January following an investigation by the Competition Authority.
