Rapid tests for the diagnosis of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) antigen in young children have been associated with fewer unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions in outpatient settings. An Italian retrospective study confirms this. Testing serves to confirm RSV infections. The study suggests that such testing reduces the prescription of unnecessary antibiotics.
