A bibliometric analysis of 8,121 publications on retinitis pigmentosa (RP) from the Web of Science and PubMed databases identified four major developmental stages: early epidemiologic characterization, basic genetic research, transition to clinical trials, and recent therapeutic innovation. Initial studies focused on disease mechanisms, while current research is mainly treatment-oriented. The field is becoming more interdisciplinary with links between genetics, bioengineering, nanomedicine and artificial intelligence-based diagnostics. Keyword analysis showed sustained interest through 2024 for topics such as optical coherence tomography angiography, retinal organoid, and cell death. Gene therapy and oxidative stress are highly active and rapidly developing research topics. RP research is advancing rapidly with an emphasis on therapeutic strategies where gene therapy and antioxidant-based interventions show strong potential, especially in combination.
