Millions of people take aspirin to prevent colon cancer. But a major new review finds that daily aspirin does not reliably prevent bowel cancer in people at average risk. A potential protective effect may not appear until more than ten years later, if at all. The evidence for this benefit is weak. Conversely, the risk of serious bleeding begins immediately, even with low doses of aspirin. Experts emphasize that decisions about prevention should be individual, not automatic.
