In 2024, 649 US mothers died of pregnancy-related causes, down from 669 deaths in 2023[1]. Maternal mortality reached 17.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, which was not statistically significantly lower than 18.6 in 2023[1]. Black women had the highest rate of death with a rate of 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 14.2 for white women, 12.1 for Hispanic women, and 18.1 for Asian women[1]. Maternal mortality increases significantly with age – women over 40 had five times the death rate (62.3 per 100,000) compared to women under 25 (13.7 per 100,000)[1]. Preliminary data from 2025 indicate that the downward trend could continue[7].
