The FDA has approved a generic form of fluticasone propionate inhalation aerosol (Flovent HFA) with a dose of 44 micrograms per activation.[1] It is the first generic drug of its type intended for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patients older than 4 years.[2][3] Flovent HFA is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, but for long-term control of the disease.[2][3] The drug is available in three doses: 44, 110 or 220 micrograms per activation.[2] Flovent HFA belongs to the group of inhaled corticosteroids and can help patients who need oral corticosteroid therapy to reduce or completely eliminate their dependence on this therapy.[2] Reported side effects include oral and pharyngeal infection caused by Candida albicans, nausea, vomiting, and joint pain.[2][3]
