An article in the journal Science (Volume 391, Number 6789, Page 998, March 2026) calls for easing the situation for young researchers. He suggests allowing walk-in interviews for faculty positions even when starting is delayed, to reduce stress on postdocs and speed up hiring after the freeze ends. Stopping all selections may discourage talented postdoctoral fellows, especially women and members of ethnic or racial minorities, from pursuing an academic career. The goal of recovery after COVID-19 is not a return to normal, but a system reset that addresses three systemic problems: excess does not equal excellence, diversification leads to discovery, and agency funding. Universities should give starting faculties access to start-up packages, extend their validity and free up funds for salaries of staff, students and PhD students in laboratories. After the labs reopen, he recommends pairing young faculty with a mentor from an established lab, with incentives such as a reduction in teaching or administration.[1]
