The new drug acosiborole is a simple treatment for sleeping sickness with a single dose of three pills.[1] In a phase 3 clinical trial led by the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative in Geneva and partners in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Guinea, it was effective in 95 percent of patients.[1] It was administered to more than 200 patients with the most common form of sleeping sickness in both early and late stages in ten hospitals in the Congo and Guinea.[1] Adverse effects were mild or moderate, most commonly fever and fatigue.[1] Four non-treatment-related deaths occurred during the study.[1] The drug simplifies therapy compared to current drugs that are time-consuming, toxic or require painful procedures.[1] It is expected to be more accessible in rural areas where the disease is prevalent.[1]
