Officials at the United States' National Science Foundation (NSF) said artificial intelligence and quantum technology are now driving NSF grant awarding. The article appeared in Science, Volume 391, Number 6789, Pages 965-966, March 2026. In fiscal year FY26, NSF's investments in AI focus on three interconnected components: basic and translational AI research, support for education, and access to data and advanced computing infrastructure. NSF continues to support the National AI Research Institutes, which were established in 2019 as national centers at universities. Investments include basic research in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language technologies, as well as applied research in agriculture, manufacturing, biotechnology, transportation, and healthcare. Quantum Leap focuses on the use of quantum mechanics for sensors, computers, modeling and communication at the atomic level. The NSF 2026 Big Idea ties research to the 250th anniversary of the US and promotes convergent research addressing societal issues.
