Radiopharmaceuticals are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, especially cancer, but patients in the African region face delays in their availability. The study examined factors influencing the importation of radiopharmaceuticals in six English-speaking countries of the Southern African Development Community through an online questionnaire distributed to health professionals and distributors. Based on 10 completed and two partially completed surveys, preliminary results indicated that high import costs, logistical delays, inconsistent customs procedures and a limited number of suppliers are the main problems. Together, these factors interfere with the timely delivery of radiopharmaceuticals, which is critical given their short half-lives. South Africa remains a major regional supplier, but its high costs and dominant position limit access for neighboring countries. The study recommends strengthening regional cooperation, harmonizing customs procedures and expanding local production capacity to improve the availability of radiopharmaceuticals in the region.
