March is Multiple Myeloma (MM) Awareness Month, which raises awareness, encourages action, and strengthens the voices of individuals affected by the disease.[usercontent] Multiple myeloma is a malignant disease of plasma cells, the second most common blood cancer, accounting for approximately 1% of all cancer diagnoses and 10–15% of hemato-oncology cases.[3][5] In the Czech Republic, the incidence in 2014 was 4.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with 742 newly diagnosed cases in 2022 (6.9 per 100,000).[1][2] Mortality in 2022 reached 408 deaths (3.8 per 100,000), accounting for 1.5% of all cancer deaths.[2] The prevalence is increasing: in 2014, 1,982 people lived with MM, in 2021 there were already 3,323 people (31.6 per 100,000).[1][3] Five-year survival in treated patients hovered around 40% in the period 2010–2014, today it is close to 50% thanks to modern therapies such as immunotherapy.[1][4] The disease mainly affects people over 50, with a median age of around 70.[3]
