On February 18, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to support the domestic production of glyphosate, an herbicide sold as Roundup, citing national security and food safety[1][2]. The order provides immunity pursuant to the Defense Production Act, which protects parties from liability for actions taken to comply with presidential orders[1]. Glyphosate is the subject of tens of thousands of lawsuits in which plaintiffs allege that the substance caused non-Hodgkin's lymphoma[1]. Bayer, which is the only domestic producer of glyphosate in the US, this week entered into a settlement agreement in the United States, which foresees the expenditure of 7.25 billion dollars over 21 years[1]. Trump's move outraged part of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, which has long fought against the use of glyphosate[3]. However, Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., founder of the MAHA movement, reluctantly supported the regulation, citing national security and dependence on enemy countries[3]. At the same time, Kennedy stated that the ministry is working on the transformation to regenerative agriculture, which should reduce the use of glyphosate[3].
