A Rutgers-led study found that eating less protein may help slow the growth of liver cancer in people with impaired liver function. A damaged liver cannot properly remove toxic ammonia produced during protein metabolism. Excess ammonia thus feeds tumor growth. In mice, reducing dietary protein reduced ammonia levels. This intervention slowed the growth of tumors. At the same time, it significantly improved the survival of mice.
