Scientists have discovered the LRG1 protein that triggers the earliest damage in diabetic retinopathy. This protein causes the tiny blood vessels in the retina to narrow and reduce the supply of oxygen. In mice, turning off the LRG1 protein stopped retinal damage before it could take hold. A newly identified protein may hold the key to preventing diabetic blindness. The finding could pave the way for treatments that protect vision even before symptoms appear.
