Sean Bourke, consultant in emergency medicine, coroner and learning from death, advises that it is normal to feel anxious before giving evidence at a coroner's inquest, but preparation and communication are key. If the organization has a legal team, meet with them beforehand as they are experts in the process and know the idiosyncrasies of local legal counsel. Join online educational and advocacy organizations that offer legal advice. The legal team will have access to your evidence, but know your material well so you can focus on the questions. The preparation is similar whether virtual or face-to-face: dress smartly and arrive on time. Consider swearing or affirming an intention to be truthful, and swearing may require its own holy book. The family of the deceased may be present.
