NHS England has suspended the prescribing of gender-confirming hormones to treat gender incongruence or dysphoria in young people under the age of 18. The decision follows a review which found that the available evidence did not support their use. Previously, the NHS could prescribe estrogen or testosterone, along with psychological support, to 16- and 17-year-old patients with clinical gender dysphoria or clinical nonconformity. In addition to the pause, there will be a 90-day public consultation on removing these treatments from the NHS as a routine intervention for under-18s. Patients currently receiving masculinizing or feminizing hormones on the NHS can continue treatment if approved by their clinical irreversibility team. Trans advocacy groups have called the decision cruel, and some are considering legal action.
