AI agents are rapidly proliferating in healthcare, performing tasks such as analyzing patient data, automating administration, supporting diagnoses, and recommending treatment.[1][2] At the HIMSS 2026 conference, AI agents are everywhere. These agents operate autonomously, make data-driven decisions, learn over time, and exhibit deep contextual awareness, such as pulling patient history, vital signs, and literature.[1] According to an NVIDIA survey, 47% of organizations in healthcare and life sciences are already actively using or evaluating the use of AI agents, particularly for drug discovery and knowledge management.[5] In 2026, a shift to proactive interventions is expected, where agents detect trends in real time and warn before a crisis.[1] However, experts highlight the lack of validation of these systems, including regulatory issues such as HIPAA, FDA approval and GDPR.[5] The main challenges are regulatory compliance, data and lack of internal cancellations.[5] In healthcare, agents are integrated into clinical workflows with final supervision by doctors.[2]
