Researchers warn that governments have failed to make a tangible difference with policies promoting physical activity over the past two decades. The authors of the study published in Nature Health call for a more coordinated approach in sectors such as transport, housing and education. Physical activity should not only be encouraged to combat cardiovascular disease, but also to contribute to other goals, such as improving the climate and reducing mental mortality attributed to physical inactivity. The World Health Organization reports that 1 in 3 adults and 8 in 10 adolescents do not meet the recommended level of physical activity. It recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week for adults and 60 minutes per day for children and adolescents. The WHO found that 31.3% of the world's adults, or 1.8 billion people, are insufficiently physically active.
