Pharmaceutical projects to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have fallen by more than a third, or 35%, over the past five years. This decline occurred despite rising deaths from resistant infections. The World Health Organization has declared AMR as one of the greatest global health threats. In 2019, 1.27 million people died directly from resistant infections worldwide, contributing to approximately 4.95 million deaths. In the UK, the number of deaths from resistant infections increased by almost 17% between 2023 and 2024, from 2,041 to 2,379. The UK Health Safety Agency in England reported almost 400 new cases per week in 2024. The findings come from a benchmarking report by the Access to Medicine Foundation, which analyzed drug companies' efforts against superbugs.
