A survey of NHS staff in England has revealed that doctors face toxic racism, increasing violence and abuse from patients, the public and colleagues. The annual survey was conducted from September to November 2025 and received more than 766,000 responses. Little progress has been made in improving morale or reducing burnout among employees. Persistent toxic racist behavior has been confirmed. Almost one in six local doctors was physically assaulted at work last year. White doctors are more likely to experience physical attacks and abuse from patients or the public than ethnic minority doctors. Conversely, doctors from other ethnic groups were more likely to be assaulted or abused by managers or colleagues. NHS England admitted it had not moved quickly enough to tackle staffing problems and vowed to force changes.
