Researchers analyzed more than 8,400 colonoscopies and found that both adenomas and serrated polyps in the colon increase the risk of serious precancerous changes by up to five times. These two types of polyps may represent separate pathways to colon cancer that may occur simultaneously. Almost half of patients with serrated polyps also had adenomas, making this high-risk combination more common than previously thought. The results of the study emphasize the importance of early detection of these polyps. Regular colonoscopy surveillance is key to reducing the risk of colon cancer.
