Doctors in radiology are facing an unsustainable increase in demand for services and an unbearable workload. This problem is not new, as noted in an August 1978 article in The BMJ by radiologist MJ Brindle entitled "The Radiological Workload - A Solution". At the time, there was consensus on two approaches to the relentless growth of the radiological burden. The first approach is to try to keep up with demand by increasing capacity by buying more machines and training more employees. Brindle called this "reflexive approach" ineffective in 1978. Both approaches are still relevant, according to the article. The problem of the inexorable increase in the workload of radiology cannot be solved by the radiology department alone.
