Vertical health care programs have been highly effective in rapidly rolling out HIV services in high-burden countries in southern and eastern Africa. With improved access to care and increased life expectancy, people with HIV are affected by NCDs, especially hypertension and diabetes, at rates similar to those without HIV. This shift leads to a growing need to transition vertical care programs into integrated national health care systems. The aim is to ensure the sustainability of such systems in sub-Saharan Africa. The article emphasizes moving integrated care directly into communities.
