Scientists have discovered tough new DNA-binding proteins in volcanic lakes and deep-sea vents that survive extreme conditions. These proteins remain stable under heat, salt and harsh chemicals. Researchers found them after scanning huge genetic databases. One of these proteins greatly improved LAMP rapid diagnostic tests, making them faster and more sensitive. The discovery could help create better tools for detecting infectious diseases.
