TTHealthWatch is a weekly podcast from Texas Tech where Elizabeth Tracey of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Rick Lange, MD of Texas Tech Health El Paso discuss cutting edge medical topics. The podcast focuses on the potential benefits and risks of colon cancer screening. Another topic is sleep in teenagers. Colon and rectal cancer screening is the most effective for early detection of the disease, reducing mortality by up to 30%.[1] It includes faecal occult blood tests (OCB) and colonoscopy, which allows polyps to be removed during the examination.[3][5] In Slovakia, it is intended for asymptomatic people aged 50-75 once every 2 years, coordinated by health insurance companies.[2][5] In 2025, thanks to the screening, 1,075 cases were caught and almost 190,000 invitations were sent out.[3] No screening is 100% effective, and colonoscopy carries a small risk of bowel damage.[4]
