A 10-year analysis by the Health Foundation think tank comparing 2011 and 2021 census data on a sample of 34.2 million respondents found that unemployment is associated with significant disparities in health status. Persons who did not work due to long-term illness or disability in 2011 were 2.5 times more likely to no longer be in good health in 2021. Adults who are able to work and looking for employment also had a significantly higher risk of poor health compared to their employed peers. The analysis showed that unemployed people, people living in rented accommodation and those living in deprived areas were much more likely to be in poor health in 2011. The results show that unemployment is associated with a worsening of the health status reported by the respondents themselves.
