A federal judge in Boston has temporarily blocked Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s overhaul of vaccination recommendations. The judge said Kennedy likely violated federal procedures. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a reduction in recommended vaccines for children by about a third, to a total of 11 vaccines. Rotavirus, influenza and hepatitis A vaccines were removed from the new schedule. The goal of the changes, according to Kennedy, was to restore confidence in vaccination. However, most health systems and doctors ignore the new federal recommendations and stick to the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines. Access to and insurance coverage for previous vaccines remains for those who want them. States have the power to regulate mandatory vaccines for schools, with some refusing to follow suit.
