A new study analyzing data from 2000 to 2022 from 156 countries found a clear relationship between warmer temperatures and physical inactivity. Rising global temperatures could lead to millions of people becoming physically inactive and cause an estimated half a million premature deaths each year. According to modelling, in 2050, each additional month with an average temperature above 27.8°C would increase physical inactivity by 1.5 percentage points worldwide. The impact of climate change on physical activity is stronger for women than for men and greater in low- and middle-income countries. In low- and middle-income countries, an additional month of high temperature would increase physical inactivity by 1.85 percentage points, while in high-income countries there would be no clear effect. The study, published as part of the Lancet project, points out that warmer regions will face the greatest increase in physical inactivity.
